The architect, the sculptor, the painter, draughtsman, ceramist, and decorative artist in general all fix a certain aesthetic impulse in matter by means of diligent and painstaking labour. The emotional effect or operation of their art is not, as in music, dependent on a special kind of performance by others or by the artists themselves…..

The absence of any public action within which the work of plastic art comes to life and is enjoyed would seem to leave no room for the play-factor……….One’s inspiration may be free and vehement when one ‘conceives’, but in its execution it is always subjected to the skill and proficiency of the forming hand.
